The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test is a widely recognized 10 skill test program developed by the American Kennel Club (AKC) to promote responsible pet ownership and to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. This test is designed to strengthen the bond between humans and their canine companions while encouraging positive behavior in various social environments.

The primary aim of the CGC Test is to recognize dogs who have received training and understand basic commands, ensuring they are well-behaved and obedient. This test sets a standard for dog behavior, promoting positive conduct which benefits not only the dogs and their owners but also the community at large by highlighting responsible dog ownership.

The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program welcomes all dogs – purebred and mixed breeds alike. There are no age restrictions, proving that it’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks! While the CGC program is suitable for dogs of all ages, we understand that training a puppy differs significantly from training an adult dog. For a fantastic foundation in basic obedience and a smooth start to your canine companionship, consider our specialized program for puppies, AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy. This in-person class is the perfect first step in your puppy’s training journey.

Passing the CGC Test offers numerous advantages. It can provide formal recognition of your dog’s behavior, which can be beneficial if you’re planning to apply for housing or renters’ insurance. Additionally, it can be a stepping stone for dogs entering more advanced training for therapy work, sports, or other canine professions. Moreover, it can deepen the bond you share with your dog and is a good way to train your dog in socialization skills to be welcomed by the community or when in public.

Preparation is crucial to success in the CGC Test. Training should focus on obedience, socialization, and confidence-building exercises. Obedience classes, practicing commands regularly, and exposing your dog to a variety of environments and scenarios can significantly enhance their preparedness. Training videos are available on the AKC website including CGC classes offered by AKC clubs and Petco locations. Training books and online videos can also provide structured lesson plans to follow at your own pace.

Test Components Explained

The CGC Test comprises ten components: accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, appearance and grooming, walking on a loose leash, walking through a crowd, sit and down on command and staying in place, coming when called, behavior around other dogs, reaction to distraction, and supervised separation. Successfully completing each of these exercises is mandatory for passing the test. The CGC Test is evaluated by an approved AKC evaluator. During the test, dogs must perform each behavior on a leash and with only positive reinforcement. Handlers are allowed to use treats and verbal commands during the preparation phase but not during the actual test.
