Nationals Park saw a whole new kind of all-star on Saturday: Bruce, a 21-month-old Golden Retriever, made his MLB debut during a pregame ceremony for the Washington Nationals. Part of the team’s “Pups in the Park” event, Bruce came bounding in with a bandana, a wagging tail, and a whole lot of charm.
Already known for his bat-retrieving skills with the Rochester Red Wings—Washington’s Triple-A affiliate—Bruce earned a one-day call-up and a hero’s welcome. After Nationals reliever Zach Brzykcy dropped a bat in foul territory, Bruce took a delightfully zig-zagging route to retrieve it, grabbing the crowd’s full attention and hearts.
An Early Morning and a Whole Lot of Love

Bruce and his human, Josh Snyder, drove through the night to make the big appearance, arriving in Washington around 3 a.m. But you wouldn’t know it. Bruce spent nearly an hour on the field before the ceremony, soaking up pets from players like catcher Riley Adams and fans alike.
“Look at this dog and try not to smile,” said Snyder. “He’s great. He’s goofy. I think he’s the perfect candidate for Rochester, the Red Wings and now the Nationals.”
“Our fans and front office are always excited to see our players get promoted to the Nationals, but Bruce’s promotion is a historic call-up to the big leagues that he richly deserves,” Dan Mason, GM of the Red Wings, said in a recent press release.
More Than Just a Pretty Face

Bruce isn’t just a crowd-pleaser—he’s part of a mission. He’s Snyder’s second bat dog, following the late Milo, and both have helped raise funds for Rochester’s Veterans Outreach Center and Honor Flight of Rochester.
The Nationals’ announcement earlier in the week that Bruce had “worked his tail off” for the promotion sparked major buzz on social media. Snyder hopes the attention brings more support for their cause.
“Social media, everything like that seems like it’s seriously blown up, and we love it,” he said. “Really good publicity with our goal and our mission of bringing people together.”
Back to Triple-A—but Not Before Leaving Paw Prints
Bruce won’t be working during regular MLB games just yet. After Saturday’s debut, he’ll return to his post with the Red Wings. But his MLB moment made a lasting impression.
From his red “MLB debut” bandana to his joyful trot across the field, Bruce brought a dose of heart to the ballpark. He may not be chasing foul balls full-time in the majors, but he reminded everyone that some of the most valuable players come with four paws and boundless enthusiasm.
With his Instagram page “Bruseisbatdog,” he has managed to gather five thousand followers, a number that is continuing to grow after his major league debut.
As the Nationals look ahead in the season, one thing’s for sure: Bruce the Bat Dog knocked his debut out of the park.
And baseball’s never looked better.
