Vega, the rescue dog who was returned after adoption for being “inconvenient.”

Vega’s journey started in a kill shelter in Oklahoma City. After being abandoned, she was placed on the euthanasia list due to overcrowding. Luckily, the We’re OK! Foundation stepped in, covering her veterinary expenses and placing her with a foster home.

Shortly after, Vega was adopted, but just 11 days later, the unthinkable happened—she was returned. According to Newsweek, her adopters “just decided having a dog was inconvenient,” as Kayla Winrow, Vega’s foster mom, explained. They wanted to move and didn’t want to bring Vega along, even though the dog had done nothing wrong.

“They wanted to move and didn’t want to bring her along,” Winrow said in a TikTok video posted to her account @salvage.souls. “That was the only reason. She wasn’t bad. She didn’t do anything wrong.”

Vega was rehomed again after being discarded by her adoptive family.

Vega didn’t misbehave, act out, or cause trouble. She simply became an afterthought to people unprepared for pet ownership.

In an interview with Newsweek, Winrow explained that the original foster who saved Vega had to move away unexpectedly and couldn’t take her back. That’s when Winrow and her husband stepped in to prevent Vega from being sent back to the shelter system—or worse.

“We couldn’t let her get the short end of the stick again,” Winrow said. “She adjusted well since she was familiar with us. She was extremely happy to be here.”

Why So Many Pets Get Abandoned

According to a 2024 study in the journal Animals, the top reasons pets are relinquished include behavioral issues (28%), housing or relocation (18%), and lack of capacity to care for the animal (16%). In Vega’s case, it wasn’t behavior—it was human convenience.

Vega would be perfect for anyone looking for a loyal, loving companion who enjoys having a tagalong in life,” Winrow shared. “She’s a total snugglebug on the couch but also loves going to dog-friendly places.”

Vega is now thriving with a loving family—and she’ll never be returned again.

Vega’s story ends the way it always should have. After just a few weeks back in foster care, she was adopted by a family that truly cherishes her. According to the We’re OK! Foundation, Vega now lives with a new fur brother, a human sister, and two parents who “absolutely adore her.”

“Cheers to the best of the rest of your life, sweet girl,” the foundation posted. “You deserve all the love this world has to give.”

Vega’s journey from kill shelter to being a dog returned after adoption shows the resilience of animals—and the failure of humans who treat pets as disposable. But now, she’s finally home.
