Nothing can be more heartbreaking than an abused dog forced to mistrust humans. In the USA alone, almost 3 million dogs entered shelters in 2024 with the figures growing. While the reasons may vary ranging from injured street canines to surrendered dogs, there are a good many cases of dogs arising as victims of abuse and neglect. Recovering from physical and emotional abuse is a challenge for both animal and human caregiver, but fortunately, many stories do have a happy ending. One such incident is that of Chance, a dog so severely abused that her rescuers felt she might not make it. Chance surprised them all with a little help from her human savior and today, she is a changed loving dog.

A Heartbreaking Beginning

Chance’s story unfolded very recently in 2025 and is a poignant reminder of the cruelty some animals endure. She was discovered severely abused, bearing stab wounds to her stomach testament to the unimaginable pain inflicted upon her. She was rescued by Niall Harbison, founder of the nonprofit Happy Doggo, where Chance began her journey toward healing. Harbison, known for his dedication to canine welfare, took immediate action to ensure she received the medical attention she desperately needed. According to Harbison who has made it his life mission to save animals in distress, Chance’s physical wound have healed, but it will take time for her to do so emotionally.

The Road to Recovery

Over the course of three weeks, Chance underwent intensive care. Her physical wounds, including the punctures, healed remarkably, thanks to the diligent efforts of her veterinary team. However, the emotional scars remained. Harbison noted that while her body was mending, her spirit needed time and space to recover. Recognizing this, he emphasized the importance of providing her with a stable and loving environment to rebuild her trust in the world.

A Golden Opportunity

Understanding Chance’s unique needs, Harbison made a life-changing decision: he would adopt her himself. This act granted Chance the esteemed “Golden Ticket” at Happy Doggo, a designation reserved for dogs who become permanent members of the organization due to their special circumstances. This ticket ensures that Chance will live out her days in a safe, nurturing environment, free from the fears of her past.

Chance’s new home includes not just Harbison but also his other dog, Hank. The presence of a fellow canine companion is expected to aid in her emotional rehabilitation, offering her both comfort and a sense of security. Harbison believes that with time, patience, and love, Chance will regain her confidence and learn to enjoy life once more.

Chance’s transformation from a victim of abuse to a cherished family member has resonated with many. Her story serves as a powerful testament to the resilience of animals and the profound impact of compassion. As Harbison aptly put it, “Our job is to love them so hard they forget the awful lives before this.”
