March 23rd, 2025 is US National Puppy Day, a day conceived by animal advocate Colleen Paige in 2006 to raise awareness on the humane treatment of puppies, celebrate puppies and be kind to animals who should be treated with love and respect. Puppies are a source of joy and companionship across the US, with certain breeds winning over hearts for their distinctive traits. From city apartments to suburban backyards, these dogs shine with personalities as diverse as their owners. Here, we explore ten popular US breeds—starting with the French Bulldog—focusing on what makes each one special in behavior and quirks.

1. French Bulldog: The Compact Comedian

The French Bulldog has surged in popularity across the US, thanks to its irresistible bat-like ears and smooshed face. In fact, the American Kennel Club has named the Frenchie, America’s top dog breed three years in a row. These pint-sized pups are known for their playful, goofiness and clownish demeanor, while exuding confidence and charm, thriving on human attention. Being a laid-back low-energy breed makes them perfect for apartment dwellers. Their stubborn streak can surface during training, but their affectionate nature and desire to please usually win out, making them a delightful blend of sass and sweetness.

2. Labrador Retriever: The Eternal Optimist

No list of popular US breeds is complete without the Labrador Retriever, a perennial favorite for its boundless enthusiasm and unwavering loyalty and gentleness. Labs are the epitome of friendliness, greeting everyone—human or canine—with a wagging tail and a goofy grin. Their intelligence and eagerness to learn make them stars in roles like service dogs or search-and-rescue heroes. What sets them apart is their love for life’s simple pleasures: a tennis ball, a swim in the lake, or a belly rub can send them into pure bliss earning them the title of America’s sweetheart.

These dogs radiate a calm, gentle energy, paired with an innate desire to connect with people. They’re highly empathetic, often sensing when their owners need a nuzzle or a paw on the lap. Goldens are playful and active, loving outdoor adventures, but they’re just as content curling up by the fireplace. Their standout trait? An almost magical ability to forgive—drop a treat, step on a paw, and they’ll look at you with those soulful eyes as if to say, “It’s all good.” It’s no wonder they’re a top pick in the US.

They’re deeply loyal, often forming a special bond with one person, but their protective instincts extend to the whole household. What’s unique is their “serious play” mode—they’ll fetch a ball with the focus of a soldier on a mission, only to melt into a cuddle bug at home.
