In a heartbreaking and harrowing incident, four newborn kittens were discovered zip-tied together beneath a shopping cart in a Rancho Santa Fe, California shopping center parking lot. The kittens were rushed to the Helen Woodward Animal Center, where two tragically passed away, and two—tentatively named Frodo and Sam—are now fighting for their lives.
A Horrific Start to Life
According to Jessica Gercke, a representative of the Helen Woodward Animal Center, the kittens were found by a compassionate employee from the shopping center who immediately brought them to the rescue shelter. Upon arrival, the kittens were still attached to their umbilical cords, infested with fleas, and estimated to be less than five days old—indicating they had been cruelly abandoned at an extremely vulnerable stage of life.
“They still had their umbilical cords attached and were covered in fleas when they came in.”Gercke explained on People interview.
Against All Odds
Despite the disturbing condition in which they were found, hope has not faded. Of the surviving pair, one kitten is mostly unharmed, while the other has significant injury to its rear left leg, likely due to the zip tie. Still, their survival instincts have shone through.
The center noted, “Hope won out,” as both kittens responded well to bottle feeding almost immediately—a crucial milestone for their recovery.
“That was our biggest concern at first,” said Kendall Schulz, adoptions director at the center. “We were worried they hadn’t eaten in hours and wouldn’t eat.”
Their quick response to feeding not only gave staff renewed hope, but also marked a turning point in their journey to recovery. Though still weak, Frodo and Sam are displaying the kind of resilience that speaks to the strength of even the smallest lives. Each feeding, each tiny purr, is a testament to their will to live and the love they are now receiving.

The kittens are now in foster care, where they are receiving round-the-clock attention. Schulz emphasized the importance of finding experienced fosters, saying, “Finding fosters qualified to bottle feed is super important, because these little guys need to be fed every two hours.”
Fortunately, she added, “We have an extensive network of qualified fosters who can drop everything and help out.” Their commitment plays a vital role in ensuring these fragile lives have a fighting chance.

Founded in 1972, the Helen Woodward Animal Center is a no-kill facility that offers both adoption and humane education programs. The center also provides therapeutic services for people, making it a unique pillar of compassion in the community.
