Merle, a 7-year-old Great Pyrenees, sat watching with big, hopeful eyes as the car pulled away. His owner had died, leaving him in the care of his owner’s wife, who could no longer keep him. So, with tears, she surrendered him to the rescue. The photograph of Merle captured in that moment of farewell – looking back at the driveway, his world changing in an instant – has since gone viral. The Facebook post shared by the shelter was heartbreaking with several offering to take in the beautiful boy.
A Life of Love and Loyalty
Merle had known a life of care. According to his new handlers at the Great Pyrenees Rescue of Wisconsin, he’d been fully vaccinated, well-house-trained, and accustomed to being part of the family and around grandchildren. His surrender was not about misbehaviour — it was about circumstance.
The Community Steps In
When the viral image emerged, comments poured in: “He looks so confused and devastated. Heart‐breaking for all.” One Facebook user wrote, “I hope whoever he ends up with will make it a point to keep in contact with his mom and send her updates.”
Another wrote, “I have a big comfy couch and run of the house waiting for him. I’ve had Pyrs for over 20 years and they all loved being outside but also loved sleeping inside being a couch potato – especially when they aged.”
The rescue’s director emphasized how important it is that owners surrender properly rather than abandon — it honors the bond they once shared.
A New Chapter Begins
Though his moment of sorrow was real, Merle’s story did not end there. The rescue team acknowledged their goal: to find him a new home that honors his gentle temperament and gives him the restful environment he deserves. His past love and loyalty will now become the heart of his future.
