On what should have been an ordinary day near a local park in Los Angeles, witnesses were left stunned when they saw a dog hurled from a moving truck. The one-year-old mixed breed—later named Buddy—landed on the street and bolted in fear. But before danger could take hold, a good Samaritan rushed to help, scooping Buddy into safety. What began as an act of cruelty quickly became the start of a rescue effort fueled by compassion.

The Sweet Soul Behind the Name

Buddy isn’t just another abandoned dog—he’s a playful, affectionate companion who loves people, dogs, and even cats. With soulful eyes and an energetic spirit, he’s the kind of dog who would thrive in a home with another lively pup or with someone committed to daily walks and trips to the park. While he’s gentle with cats, he’s happiest when surrounded by active and loving company.

Rescue and First Steps Toward Safety

Volunteer Sabrina Escarze, 44, with the nonprofit Sweet Angel Dog Rescue, stepped in to coordinate Buddy’s care. After the incident, Buddy was temporarily fostered, and his first foster family generously paid for a two-week board-and-train program to help him adjust. Sadly, when health issues prevented them from continuing, Buddy once again found himself without a permanent home.

A Reflection of a Larger Crisis

Buddy’s story is part of a much bigger problem. In 2024, about 5 million animals entered U.S. shelters and rescues—an increase of nearly 3 percent from 2023. By the year’s end, 103,000 more pets had entered shelters than had been adopted or reclaimed, leaving facilities overwhelmed and underfunded. With abandonment cases like Buddy’s becoming more common, rescue organizations are being stretched to their limits.

The Urgent Need for a Forever Home

In the weeks since he was found, Buddy has been cared for by local sitters, with Sweet Angel Dog Rescue covering the costs. But as Escarze explains, “We are paying for him to be at a dog sitter right now and it’s adding up. He really just needs a stable, loving place to call home.” On Reddit’s r/rescuedogs, where Buddy’s story was shared, comments poured in—many expressing heartbreak and a desire to see him safe and loved. One person wrote, “This baby deserves a home and a hug.”

While Buddy’s resilience shines through, what he needs most is a permanent home with people who will never let him down. Anyone interested in adopting or fostering Buddy can contact Sweet Angel Dog Rescue directly. His journey began with heartbreak, but with the right family, it could end with love, stability, and the joyful life he’s always deserved.

Buddy is still up for adoption.
