DD Animal News: 5th June 2025: While perky and feisty animals like Moo Deng the hippo have enjoyed the social media spotlight this last year, there is one that has gone unnoticed except for her fame in San Diego. Hannah Shirley, a pygmy hippo set a world record as the world’s oldest pygmy hippo surpassing the lifespan of her species when she celebrated her 51st birthday on May 25th, 2025, at San Diego’s Zoo Safari Park.
A Backyard Discovery Leads to a New Beginning

In 2002, Hannah’s life took a pivotal turn when she was discovered living in a private backyard in Escondido, California. Andy Blue, then the animal care manager at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, received a call about the unusual situation. Upon arrival, he found Hannah in a makeshift corral, calm and approachable. Recognizing the unsuitability of her living conditions and the legal implications, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife intervened. With a trail of carrots and apples, Andy gently guided Hannah into a trailer, relocating her to the Ramona Wildlife Center, part of the San Diego Humane Society.
Celebrating a Milestone: Hannah Turns 51
On May 25, 2025, Hannah surpassed the previous longevity record for her species, reaching 51 years, 6 months, and 3 days. Born on November 22, 1973, she has lived well beyond the typical 30–50-year lifespan of pygmy hippos in the wild. The Ramona Wildlife Center marked the occasion with a festive celebration, complete with watermelon treats and party decorations. Staff and volunteers gathered to honor Hannah, reflecting on her journey and the joy she brings to the sanctuary.
Life at the Ramona Wildlife Center

Since her arrival at the Ramona Wildlife Center, Hannah has enjoyed a life tailored to her needs. Her 13,000-square-foot paddock features a natural pond and ample shade, mimicking her native West African habitat. Daily routines include spa-like back rubs with a broom, sprinkler showers, and a diet rich in leafy greens and fruits. Her caregivers note her playful spirit and gentle demeanor, describing her as a beloved ambassador for her species.
The Plight of the Pygmy Hippopotamus
Native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, primarily Liberia, the pygmy hippopotamus (Choeropsis liberiensis) is classified as endangered, with fewer than 2,500 individuals remaining in the wild. Threats include habitat loss due to logging and agriculture, as well as hunting. In captivity, however, they can live up to 55 years, as evidenced by Hannah’s remarkable age. Her story highlights the importance of conservation efforts and the role of sanctuaries in protecting vulnerable species.
A Symbol of Hope and Resilience

Hannah Shirley’s journey from a backyard enclosure to becoming the world’s oldest pygmy hippo in managed care serves as a testament to the impact of dedicated wildlife rehabilitation. Her story resonates with animal lovers and conservationists alike, reminding us of the difference compassionate care can make. As she continues to thrive at the Ramona Wildlife Center, Hannah stands as a symbol of hope for her species and the broader efforts to preserve our planet’s biodiversity.
