It was supposed to be a relaxing getaway for Sadie and her humans — a simple vacation to San Diego for a few days of getaway, sunshine, and family time. Instead, on November 23, 2025, that family outing became a heart-wrenching ordeal. Sadie, a black Labrador retriever mix, dashed out the front door of the house they were staying in and vanished without a trace. In a matter of seconds, joy turned to panic.
Her owners, Alexis and Brandon, were left scrambling — afraid, desperate, and clinging to hope. The terror of losing a beloved pet far from home is something many pet-owners can empathize with.
A GPS Collar Becomes a Lifeline
Thankfully, Sadie was wearing a GPS collar. When the couple checked the tracker, their hearts skipped a beat: the signal pointed them toward Ocean Beach, San Diego — roughly two miles from where they were staying.
Armed with this glimmer of hope, they rushed to the shoreline. But what transpired next was something even more nightmarish. A local surfer, alarmed, alerted rescue teams — he had seen a dog swept off a jetty and dragged into the ocean’s rip current.
Lifeguards and Coast Guard Launch a Rescue in the Rough Sea
Answering the call were lifeguards Garrett Smerdon and Jack Alldredge — along with a small boat from the U.S. Coast Guard. They launched into the surf from Mission Beach, San Diego, hoping against hope to find Sadie alive.
For an agonizing hour, they scoured the dark, choppy waters. At one point, they were nearly ready to call off the search. As Alldredge later said: “We searched for an hour … at that point, I kind of just said, ‘Please let us find this dog.’”
They believed — because black Labradors are fighters and strong swimmers — that Sadie might still have a chance.
A Miraculous Sight Far from Shore
Just when hope seemed to fade, the impossible happened. Roughly three-quarters of a mile from land, against all odds, a figure bobbed in the open waters. It was Sadie. The moment the rescuers drew closer, they realized it — and relief crashed over them like a wave.
Despite the exhaustion, Sadie was “super happy to see us,” one lifeguard said, tail wagging, spirit intact. It was one of those rare moments where despair flipped to joy before tears could even settle.
Tears, Gratitude, and a Reunion to Remember
When the rescue team radioed that Sadie had been found, Alexis and Brandon — who had been anxiously waiting — were overcome with emotion. “We literally were standing right there … and we kind of just held our breath,” Alexis said. And then: “We started crying right away.”
In a recorded video shared soon after, the couple expressed their deep gratitude to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, the lifeguards, and the Coast Guard. Their heartfelt message underscored just how much Sadie means to them — not just as a pet, but as a cherished member of their family.
