A bizarre accident in western Nebraska has gone viral after police say a dog accidentally discharged a loaded shotgun inside a parked truck, injuring a woman sitting at a nearby traffic light. The incident happened around midday on May 23 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, leaving authorities once again warning the public about firearm safety and the dangers of transporting loaded weapons inside vehicles.
According to the Scottsbluff Police Department, officers were initially dispatched to a local convenience store after reports that someone had been shot with what witnesses believed was a BB gun. While officers were en route, they were informed the incident actually involved a shotgun. When police arrived, they found a truck with visible blast damage to the passenger-side door panel, consistent with a shotgun discharge.
Dog Triggered Loaded Shotgun Inside Parked Truck
Investigators said the truck owner had stopped at the convenience store and briefly stepped out of the vehicle. During that time, a dog left inside the back seat reportedly moved across the vehicle and somehow triggered a shotgun that had a live shell chambered. The weapon discharged through the passenger-side door.
Police have not publicly explained exactly how the dog activated the firearm, though reports indicate the shotgun had been left loaded inside the vehicle. The blast traveled out of the parking lot and struck a woman who was stopped nearby at a traffic signal with her arm resting outside the window. One shotgun pellet hit her upper arm.
Woman Hospitalized With Non-Life-Threatening Injuries
Authorities said the injured woman’s wounds were not believed to be life-threatening. A family member transported her to Regional West Medical Center for treatment shortly after the shooting. No other injuries were reported.
Police later emphasized that Nebraska law prohibits traveling with a loaded shotgun inside a vehicle on public highways. The Scottsbluff Police Department stated that the case remains under investigation and used the incident as an opportunity to remind gun owners about proper firearm handling and storage practices.
Similar Dog-Related Gun Incidents Have Happened Before
As strange as the incident sounds, it is not entirely unprecedented. In November 2025, a Pennsylvania man was reportedly shot after his dog jumped onto a bed where a shotgun had been placed during cleaning. According to local police in that case, the dog’s movement caused the firearm to discharge, seriously injuring the owner.
Firearm safety experts say these unusual accidents reinforce a simple but critical principle: guns should always be treated as loaded and secured properly, especially around children or animals. Leaving loaded firearms unattended inside vehicles or homes can create unpredictable risks, even in situations people may never imagine becoming dangerous.
A Viral Story That Sparked Shock And Dark Humor Online
The Nebraska case quickly spread across social media because of its surreal nature, with many users comparing the event to something out of a comedy film or satirical news headline. Others, however, pointed out how easily the incident could have turned deadly if the blast had struck someone more directly or if multiple rounds had discharged.
While the dog itself will not face any consequences, the event has become another example of how accidental shootings can happen in entirely unexpected ways. For law enforcement officials, the bizarre circumstances do not change the larger message: unsecured firearms and loaded weapons continue posing serious risks regardless of who — or what — pulls the trigger
