Swollen and Alone, Dog Dumped at the ER Gets the Love He Needed Most

It was a typical September afternoon when The Animal Pad, a dog rescue in San Diego, received a life-altering call from their emergency veterinary partner. A 7-month-old German shepherd puppy had arrived with a swollen face and a suspected dog bite—but his bloodwork told a more troubling story.

The puppy was battling chronic illnesses rare in dogs his age. Unable to afford treatment, his owners surrendered him on the spot. That’s when The Animal Pad stepped in and gave the sick, frightened pup a fighting chance.

Lauren, The Animal Pad’s director, dropped everything to meet the pup, later named Chance. Though his face was painfully distorted and his condition dire, his soft demeanor immediately shone through.

“You can tell he is a very special dog behind it all,” The Animal Pad shared on Facebook. “His first year on the planet should not have been this, and now he’s fighting for his life.”

The rescue team moved quickly. After a blood transfusion and extensive diagnostics, vets discovered a massive abscess that had spread through his face. He would need emergency surgery to drain it.

The operation was a success. With the abscess drained, Chance’s face slowly returned to normal—and so did his spirit.

“He looks like a brand-new dog,” the rescue shared. “The swelling went down, and we could finally see the sweet pup underneath.”

But the journey wasn’t over. Despite the progress, Chance’s bloodwork still showed troubling markers, and he remained dangerously underweight. Still, caregivers were undeterred. With round-the-clock care, proper nutrition, and ongoing veterinary monitoring, Chance began to gain weight and energy day by day.

He started going on short walks, sniffing the grass, and playing with soft toys—tiny victories that marked huge steps forward. Most of all, he sought comfort in people’s arms, resting his head on their shoulders, as if to say, thank you.

Thriving in Foster Care

Chance now lives with a devoted foster family, where he’s blossomed into a happy, affectionate pup. He enjoys snuggling on the couch, playing with doggy friends, and soaking up the love he was once denied.

“Chance is the sweetest!” said Erica Fiore, director of marketing at The Animal Pad told The Dodo. “He just wants to be close to you and be loved.”

Though he’s still on medical hold while continuing treatment, Chance’s transformation has been extraordinary. His caretakers say he’s living proof that love, medicine, and a second chance can change everything.

From Survival to Joy: A Pup’s Beautiful Rebirth

Chance’s story is not just about rescue—it’s about resilience. He arrived sick, swollen, and surrendered. Now, he’s full of life, healing beautifully, and inching closer to a forever home.

His journey reminds us that with care and compassion, even the most hopeless cases can thrive. Chance didn’t just get help—he got hope.

Every update from his foster family is a celebration—not just of survival, but of what it means to be truly seen and cared for. Chance may have been discarded at his lowest, but thanks to a team that refused to give up on him, he’s writing a new chapter—one filled with playtime, soft beds, and the promise of a forever family just around the corner.
