Starving Chihuahua Chained to an Outdoor Trampoline for Months is Finally Rescued

When rescuers first saw Chico, the 3-year-old Chihuahua, he was nothing more than a frail, trembling figure chained outdoors with little hope left. His ribs and hipbones protruded; he was covered in ticks; and he had no food or water in sight.

The dog had been tethered for months to a trampoline, barely able to move, in a scene that horrified animal advocates and concerned neighbors alike. Yet, Chico’s story is also one of resilience, intervention, and — at long last — a renewed chance at life.

In 2024, fieldworkers from PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) found Chico chained outside, the tether wrapped tightly around his neck as though that was his only “home.”

The rescuers provided a proper collar, food, water, and treatment for fleas and ticks, but initially the owners refused to let go of the dog.

Months later, while distributing supplies to other dogs in a rural North Carolina trailer park, PETA’s team came across Chico again — still chained, with only two feet of tether, and in an even worse condition than before.

That time, they convinced the owners to surrender him. Described by rescuers as a “shell of himself,” Chico could barely do more than curl up and sleep at first.

Animal advocates explain that confining dogs outdoors on chains often deprives them of veterinary care, exercise, companionship, and emotional well-being.

The stress of isolation can lead to depression, anxiety, or aggressive behavior.

Healing and Transformation in a Foster Home

Once in PETA’s care, Chico began his slow but steady path toward recovery. After vaccination and medical treatment, he was placed in a foster home. Initially, he was extremely skittish — often shaking at sudden movements.

With time, patience, and kindness, Chico began to unwind. He warmed up to his foster caregiver and even developed a quirky fondness for a squeaky donut toy.

Eventually, in September, Chico was adopted by a retired woman whose previous dog had passed away.

His life turnaround has been remarkable: from sleeping on cold ground and being isolated, to being tucked in at night, playing with toys, enjoying meals, and being treated as a beloved family member.

His “favorite part of the day,” his new guardian says, is mealtime.

Lessons Learned: Compassion, Responsibility, and Awareness

Pets are family, not property: Dogs chained outdoors are often denied basic needs and the social interaction they need.

  • Advocacy matters: Without PETA’s persistence and willingness to revisit the location, Chico’s situation might never have been resolved.
  • Adoption and foster care can transform lives: With just a little love and time, a traumatized animal can rediscover trust and joy.
  • Raising awareness: Sharing stories like Chico’s helps shine a light on animal cruelty and encourages communities to take preventive action.

A New Chapter: From Survival to Comfort

Today, Chico enjoys a life few could have imagined for him just months ago. He’s warm, safe, loved, and surrounded by compassion. His journey reminds us of the fragility of voiceless lives — and of our power to make a difference. If more people speak up, act, and care, perhaps there will be fewer Chicos left chained in the dark.
