Dog Gives Birth to a Record-breaking Litter of 17 Irish Doodle Puppies

Thirteen Hours of Non-Stop Arrivals

The birth unfolded over a grueling 13-hour period on January 2. The first puppy emerged at 11 a.m., with the final one arriving around midnight. Owner Miranda Pellecchia recalled the astonishment as the deliveries continued far beyond expectations.[3]

“We knew she was going to have a big litter, but we were amazed when they just kept coming,” Pellecchia said. “Just when we thought it was all over, out would pop another one.” Marigold handled her debut motherhood with composure, allowing her family to assist throughout the process. Even after the 17th puppy arrived, the family wondered if more might follow. The event marked an extraordinary feat for the young dog.[1]

Understanding the Irish Doodle Phenomenon

Marigold, mated with a miniature poodle, gave rise to 17 Irish Doodles – a hybrid blending the Irish Setter’s athletic build and energy with the poodle’s intelligence and low-shedding coat. This crossbreed has gained popularity as a friendly, affectionate family companion since emerging in the late 20th century in the United States.[3]

The puppies combined traits make them prized pets. All 17 newborns proved healthy from the start, including the smallest of the litter, which thrived under close monitoring. The family named each one, fostering early bonds amid the bustling household that includes three children and a black Labrador named Monty.[4]

The Demands of Super-Mum Care

Marigold required substantial support post-birth, consuming 12 tins of dog food daily to sustain her energy and milk production. The family supplemented the puppies’ feeding with formula milk in the early days, while Pellecchia sacrificed sleep to weigh and tend to the brood. “It was exhausting for us, so I dread to think how poor Marigold felt,” she noted.[2]

Marigold remained vigilant, barely resting as she nurtured her offspring. Pellecchia stayed by her side through sleepless nights, ensuring all went smoothly. Monty observed the newcomers with apparent paternal interest, adding a lighthearted touch to the frenzy. The routine tested the household’s limits but highlighted the dog’s resilience.[1]

Shattering Records in Canine History

This litter established the largest documented for an Irish Doodle in the UK, surpassing the previous mark of 16 puppies from an Irish Setter named Amelia in Hampshire in 2019. Veterinarians at Barton Veterinary Surgery in Canterbury expressed rare amazement upon hearing the news.[3][4]

While far from the global record of 24 set by a Neapolitan mastiff in 2004, Marigold’s achievement stands out for its crossbreed context.[1]

Preparations for Puppy Homes

Now nearing nine weeks old, the puppies underwent vaccinations and microchipping. Pellecchia planned health checks before rehoming them, with interest already pouring in at around £1,300 each. “Obviously, we’re going to miss them because they’re adorable, but I’m also looking forward to getting my life back,” she shared.[2]

The family anticipates a return to their usual rhythm once the pups depart. Marigold has recovered well, though the experience left lasting memories of dedication and delight.
