When staff at Dekalb Humane Society (DHS) first laid eyes on the frazzled kitten, they weren’t sure what they were looking at.
“He’s a kitten. Allegedly,” DHS joked in a now-viral Facebook post. “He currently looks like he crawled out of a haunted crawlspace.”
Nicknamed Sewer Rat for his scrappy, spooky appearance, the kitten was discovered alone in the middle of the road in a trailer park. Just seven weeks old, the orphaned baby was weak, patchy, and visibly unwell. But under all the grime and scabs, there was a gentle heart ready to love.
“He was completely alone and in really rough shape when he came to us,” DHS director Teresa Feightner told The Dodo.
Diagnosed With a Severe Infection
Once safely in the care of DHS, staff quickly discovered the reason for Sewer Rat’s ghostly appearance: he was battling an intense case of ringworm—a highly contagious fungal infection that wreaks havoc on the skin and fur.
“He came in with one of the worst cases of ringworm we’ve seen in a long time,” Feightner said. “Despite how uncomfortable it must be, he’s been handling it like a champ.”
The infection had left his fur sparse and scaly, his skin irritated, and his immune system strained. Yet even through the discomfort, Sewer Rat never stopped purring.
Scruffy Kitten Wins Hearts Despite His Rough Condition
Sewer Rat was placed in a foster home where his recovery could continue in a clean, safe space. According to his foster family, the little guy has already shown what a gentle and affectionate soul he is.
“He’s a little angel,” Feightner said. “His foster says he loves to curl up on your chest to nap, and he’s surprisingly sweet for a kitten going through so much.”
Though he’s patchy, sensitive to touch, and undergoing careful medical treatment, his resilience and warmth have captured hearts. Everyone who meets him ends up completely smitten.
Searching for the Right Family
Sewer Rat is not quite ready to leave just yet—he still needs to finish his ringworm treatment and be neutered—but DHS is already searching for a loving adoptive home near their Indiana location.
“We know Sewer Rat isn’t everyone’s type,” the shelter wrote. “He’s patchy. He’s fungal. He’s got that ‘I just woke up in a ditch’ energy. But he’s also healing, sweet, playful, and so much closer to being okay.”
His future family will need a spare room to keep him isolated during the final stages of his treatment and, more importantly, the willingness to look past the scruff and see the soul inside.
What Sewer Rat Represents
While the little “crusty gremlin” is gaining attention for his unusual look, DHS hopes his story shines a light on something bigger.
“We’ve had a huge response to Sewer Rat,” Feightner said. “While he’s definitely won people over with his crusty little gremlin charm, we hope this attention also helps highlight that cats with medical needs are still deeply worthy of love.”
For shelters across the country, kittens like Sewer Rat represent a daily reality—animals who may not look perfect on the outside, but who have limitless love to give. By embracing these less “adoptable” pets, communities not only save lives but also help redefine what it means to be worthy of a second chance.
